“Rediscovering Bastar: The Untamed Beauty of Chhattisgarh’s Tribal Heartland”

Eco-tourism, ancient traditions, and majestic waterfalls draw travelers to Bastar, a hidden gem of central India.
ExploreHeritage | July 2025: Bastar, Chhattisgarh— Nestled deep in the forests of central India, Bastar is emerging as one of the most captivating offbeat travel destinations in India. Known for its tribal culture, natural beauty, and historic temples, the district is witnessing a surge in eco-conscious tourists seeking raw and immersive travel experiences.

From the Chitrakote Waterfalls, often called the Niagara of India, to the mystical caves of Kailash and Kutumsar, Bastar offers a perfect blend of adventure and spirituality. Tourists are also increasingly exploring the ancient Danteshwari Temple in Dantewada, one of the 52 Shakti Peethas, which is revered by both locals and visitors alike.

“We came here expecting just waterfalls, but what we discovered was a living museum of India’s tribal heritage,” said Roshni Mishra, a traveler from Odisha who recently visited the Bastar Dussehra, the world’s longest-running tribal festival.

The state tourism department has also begun promoting homestays and tribal handicraft markets, making it easier for tourists to engage directly with local communities. Handwoven Bastar Dhokra art, wooden masks, and tribal jewelry are now popular souvenirs among travelers.

Officials believe this renewed interest will help boost the local economy while preserving Bastar’s fragile environment and culture. “We are committed to responsible tourism that benefits both the visitors and the indigenous people,” said a spokesperson from the Chhattisgarh Tourism Board.
